Carly Tennant is a qualified child Play Therapist (MA), an actress, performer, singer, and group facilitator. She trained in psychology (BA) and as a play therapist (MA), and has extensive experience in the field of adoption, where she is honoured to work with incredible families and their adopted children to help ease family life and manifest the latent potential of children who have been through significant trauma in their early lives.
“Play therapy does not rely on words and logic but flows through the symbolism of play, providing a safe space for the child to let go, free their unconscious, and work through unintegrated trauma which may be infringing on their conscious lives and holding them back from actualising their true being. In play therapy the child can play out confusing relationship dynamics, inner narratives, and beliefs in the stable space of an accepting, nurturing, and empathetic therapeutic relationship.Through the process the child exercises choice making, is free to play, build, and discover new material without judgement, receives reinforcement and reflection in to their thoughts and feelings, moral guidance, and most importantly, the experience of being seen and heard. Through this process, the child inevitably becomes more independent, confident, and themselves, they can also develop a higher emotional vocabulary, improving relationships, developing empathy and challenging internal defensive patterns which have been set in reaction to trauma.”
Carly works with the whole family and in order to integrate and transfer the child’s individual process in to their wider social hemisphere, she offers opportunities for families to come together in the sacred space of a circle. In this circle, there is no hierarchy or judgement and it is a place for the family to unite, share intimate messages and experiences, learn more about each other as individual’s, and interact through play. It is a nurturing space for unconscious dynamics to be revealed, challenged and processed, so that new perspectives can be offered, blockages broken through and the family dynamic opened up. A client-centred approach is maintained so although the time is structured, the family paves their way and through this freedom, a profound healing process can unfold.
Carly spent six years training with Method Acting London, and in doing so unlocking her personal and collective unconscious, learning to improvise creatively with groups and individuals, breaking through individual blocks, and experimenting and exploring a range of character types, archetypes and energies. She has devised, co-produced and performed on the fringe scene in London, as well as with immersive, dinner theatre company Murder Mystery Events.
“This training has been invaluable to my process as a performer and a therapist, as I have been more aware of my truth and others’ and have learnt to trust my intuition and work creatively with my choices, understanding the importance of risk taking and challenging my deepest habits. The work with character and text also feeds in directly to my therapeutic work with families and individuals, we are all made of the same substance and everybody to some extent is struggling with the wonders and perils of humanity.”
Carly has always been very spiritual and conducted rituals and prayers of her own all throughout her childhood and teens, working with crystals, oracle cards, the channelling of energy, and more recently sound healing, chakra balancing, and Tarot. After seven years of education and rehabilitation after a profound experience in the medicine world, she has returned to the way of spirit and incorporates it in to all of her work in a subtle and humble way. In doing so she is continuing to build upon her therapeutic practice,
“My next step is to work with vulnerable women through empowerment rituals and workshops. I have recently started working with my voice, and have been exploring chakra toning and medicinal songs, as well as jazz singing and performance. I am interested in sound healing, and how vibrations can heal and balance the body mind and soul through resonating with the natural vibrations of living organisms. I aim to integrate all of my experience and training to date to offer sacred spaces for women to commune, release personal and collective trauma, and heal through the power of voice, play and ritual. I am performing and holding a series of workshops and ceremonies at Mandrea Music Festival in Italy as part of a performance troop, this is going to be an excellent opportunity to build upon my work and integrate my performance, spiritual and therapeutic practice. Watch this space!”
